Appreciative Inquiry

Our approach to work is steeped in a model for problem solving …what’s broken…what needs to be fixed? …what’s the problem?  If we approach all situations with this bias then ‘to a hammer everything is a nail.’ In reality, most of our interactions are with people not problems. And people don’t need to be ‘fixed’ because that assumes they are broken.

The opposite approach is to ask appreciative, strength-based questions that discover the ‘positive core’. When we find ‘what’s working’ we tap into the energy for positive change and engagement. We build commitment and community. We tap into true motivation and inspiration.

Appreciative Inquiry is all about questions and conversations. Individuals, groups, and organizations move in the direction of their conversations. When we focus our questions on problems and what’s wrong, we move in the direction of problems. When we use open-ended questions that focus on what’s working, we move toward cooperation and positive results.
