Step Eight: We Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Fun

“The most wasted of all days is one without laughter.”
— ee.e.cummings

My father frequently said, ‘Work hard and when you are done and if you are deserving—then and only then you can have your fun.’ That might have worked for him but not for me. My work days are extended, I never seem to be caught up and if I lived by his motto then I would never reward myself with fun. Why would I limit myself only to work and not find a way to bring fun into all that I do? Why would I segment work and fun into two separate activities as if they cannot be blended together? ‘Time flies while you’re having fun.’ That is the attitude I want to bring to my work.

  • Global Belly Laugh Day is every January 24th. At 1:24 on that day, everyone is encouraged to throw their hands in the air and start laughing. What generally happens is that once people get started with a gentle giggle or tee-hee, uncontrollable laughter is never far behind.
  • “Optimism and humor are the grease and glue of life. Without both of them, we would have never survived our captivity.” – Philp Butler, Vietnam POW
  • “Sometimes delaying fun can produce anticipation that amplifies the actual event. Our annual Christmas Party is always set for the first part of January, after everyone’s personal holiday celebrations are over. The entire team is assembled and can choose to spend the night in the safety of a hotel room or be chauffeured to and from the event. In either case, we all focus on the moment, delayed though it is. We laugh, we love, and we live. And we exchange White Elephant gifts that represent a little piece of our individuality. We all feel like we belong – to the group, the company, and each other.” — Vincent McCullum, Revolution Group.
  • Don’t put off having fun. Fun is not a reward for completing an assignment. It is the lubricant for getting things done well and working effectively with others. Make it a part of your daily routine.
